Data Protection in the Cloud

How to secure your information in the cloud?

Using a cloud service does not mean that the cloud provider is responsible for your data. Cloud providers to ensure that the hardware and software services they provide are secure.  You are the cloud consumers who remain responsible for the security of your data assets. You shall implement comprehensive file-level encryption measures stored on the cloud and make sure your data are secured.

This is a hard one to answer since it all comes down to physical security. Whether you decide to put your data on public cloud or private cloud (on-premises, or data center) you still have data sensitivity concerns. Unless YOU apply data encryption or other access control – anyone with physical access can still gain access and ultimately control of your data. As other responders have mentioned storage as a service within public cloud providers is VERY good value – you should look to combine this with your OWN data encryption in addition to that provided by the cloud provider.

Take AWS for example. Without encryption, you could argue that any of the DC workers could gain access to your data – but AWS add some controls to prevent that. Then the people who administer those controls can access your data. You use AWS built-in encryption and this prevents (hopefully) those people from accessing your data – but there is still one or more entities within AWS acting together who can hand over your data if requested by a legal entity. Layer your own encryption on top of this where you hold the encryption keys and ONLY YOU has final access – and you still control down the chain.

In the end – all forms of ‘hosting’ are vulnerable – just apply your own data encryption in all cases.
